“There are certainly local residents who don’t know Rob Bos Otten and his business partner Margot, but there are not a lot of them. From Friday to Sunday (or by appointment +31 6 54733552) they welcome local residents and customers at Singel 110, on the corner of Blauwburgwal, 5 minutes from Central Station.

The business is known by the somewhat mysterious initials of B.O.T.C. Under closer inspection it is an abbreviation of the impressive sounding company name Bos Otten Trading Company. The shop offers visitors an abundance of beautiful and exotic foreign objects, mainly from the far east. Their assortment is comprised of various collections, such as the Silvershine lamp series along with bronze sculptures, wine racks, jewellery, glass objects, folding stools, printing stamps for cloth, shell boxes, mirrors with recycled teak frames and a big but appealing Dachshund. Not forgetting the small things such as black and white painted sardines and bright red peppers. What is striking also are the four beautifully decorated metres high pillars from India. Rob says immediately these are not for sale as they are part of his private collection.

Twenty five years ago Rob founded B.O.T.C. Before this he had a successful international career in fashion. He made a name for the brand shop Soap Studio, by designer Frits Klaarenbeek, by introducing his clothing range to selected stores such as De Bijenkorf and Maison de Bonneterie. He also went over the border and offered Soap Studio creations to the most important Women’s Fashion Exchange Prêt-à-Porter of Paris and counterparts in the UK, Denmark and Germany. The result was a list of customers stretching from Scandinavia to France which included high caliber names such as Galleries Lafayette and Harrods. He was a star salesman and driven by his passion was almost always travelling. After some happy decades in the fashion world, Rob decided that it was time to do something completely different and established B.O.T.C.

Whilst searching for unique objects he could fulfil his passion for travel and indulge in his lust for adventure. Partly because of his mixed Chinese and Indonesian background he travelled frequently to Indonesia. Based in Bali he travelled to different places within the archipelago searching for exceptional items. (He was the first in the Netherlands to sell recycled teak table.) Beside this he also travelled through India where he found special artisan objects. His hunting territory was also closer to home; he could be found in Poland, Ukraine and France where he discovered startlingly beautiful objects. He opened a shop on the Singel, first at number 91 and since 2018 on the opposite side at 110. The larger objects (cupboards, an enormous wooden horse, etc.) where hoisted to the second floor apartment in a former nunnery on the Spaarndammerstraat, where he used to hold open days. B.O.T.C. gained a wide fame due to advertising in guides such as Local Heroes.

Yet for this happy go lucky man things haven’t always gone this way; in 2015 he suffered a stroke. Now, although somewhat limited, Rob is just as enthusiastic and engaging as before. He has, together with Margot, created a special place with a unique relaxed atmosphere which you rarely find anymore.”

Something more than just plain existence

“If there is one thing I can say about my paintings, it is that they are full of life. And about life you can say an endless number of things. For me the canvas is a blank sheet of paper, very much like what a blank sheet of paper is for a writer – full of endless possibilities. And just like a writer I start at the top left of the surface and finish some time later at the bottom right. My painting is like a story that evolves. I also paint this way for a very practical reason – because it reduces the risk of smudging the paint before it dries – I am right-handed.

My method of painting or drawing hasn’t really changed since I was a kid. Most children stop painting or drawing by the time they learn how to express themselves with words on paper, or nowadays on the computer. In this respect I was not like most kids. I never stopped painting or drawing. School often bored me and while the teacher was telling us his slightly boring, predictable stories, I was drawing in my notebooks, on the tables, everywhere. To reduce the boredom.

I never knew at the beginning of a drawing or painting what was going to emerge. I didn’t want to know – I still don’t. That was the whole fun, the adventure of it. Through the years I taught myself to draw with recognizable elements. A bit like a writer agrees with himself to write with real words and logical sentences, to make sense to himself and his audience. I also taught myself to master paints and brushes, to get to know them and to learn how to use them to best advantage, in a childlike way, discovering the possibilities the way they presented themselves while I was experimenting. So, slowly, I developed a personal language of shapes. I am still playing and discovering.

I never cared about how the result (painting, drawing) should look like, and I still don’t. First and foremost, painting for me is a journey into the unknown. It is my subconscious telling me a story. I try not to interfere with it with self-censorship – it only must be recognisable. The elements must be recognisable. And the painting must be finished. Which very often means that the canvas is full, and that a lot of time has passed in the meantime – time I wasn’t aware was passing.

I love to look at my paintings. I see all kinds of animals, birds, fish, reptiles, dogs and insects. Or cars, houses and geometric shapes. Or sentences – mostly sentences of songs that are in my head while I am painting. Or things people say in my personal life or in the media. But mostly I see humans. Naked people, partying people, suffering people, babies, soldiers, men and women. And of the people it is their face and all their facial expressions that I enjoy painting and looking at. It is the human face that feels the most like it is painting itself.

When I look at my paintings I see a flow of images. Forms that painted themselves while I was playing with the materials. Images that painted themselves while I was discovering and daydreaming. And here they are now, alive, looking back at me. And I feel I owe them something, as if they expect something from me. Something more than just their plain existence.”

Project ‘Modern Nightwatch’

Rembrandt´s Nachtwacht als schilderexperiment in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam: ´Weerslag van het Rembrandtjaar in een continue veranderend schilderij`. In het kader van Rembrandt´s vierhonderdste verjaardag, realiseerden de kunstschilders Piet Linnebank en Taco Eisma een eigen versie van de Nachtwacht in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.

Rembrandt´s Nachtwacht als schilderexperiment in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam ´Weerslag van het Rembrandtjaar in een continue veranderend schilderij` In het kader van Rembrandt´s vierhonderdste verjaardag, zullen de moderne kunstschilders Piet Linnebank en Taco Eisma een eigen versie van de Nachtwacht realiseren in de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA). Zij zullen vanaf maart tot december 2006 dagelijks werken aan hun interpretatie van de Nachtwacht. Met deze hedendaagse versie van Nederlands meest bekendste schilderij willen zij de nadruk leggen op Rembrandt´s maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en zijn compassie voor de medemens. Met de originele Nachtwacht als basis, geven zij een eigen interpretatie van gebeurtenissen die dit jaar in de actualiteit, nationaal en internationaal zullen plaatsvinden. Het doek zal continu veranderen. Sommige gedeeltes zullen talloze malen overgeschilderd worden, andere zullen hetzelfde blijven. Door het vastleggen van de tussenfasen ontstaat een levend organisme dat steeds verandert en uitblinkt in dynamiek. Door gebruik te maken van de (digitale) fotografie zal elke tussenfase van het schilderij ook een kunstwerk op zich zijn. Zo ontstaat een overzicht, een journal, een beeld van het Rembrandt jaar 2006 door de ogen van twee schilders die net als Rembrandt in zijn tijd niet schromen zich door middel van hun kunst uit te spreken over hun omgeving en de tijd waarin zij leven; een eigentijdse hulde aan ´s Nederlands grootste kunstenaar. Linnebank en Eisma deden ook al mee aan het project de Nieuwe Nachtwacht, dat na maandenlang schilderen op Luchthaven Schiphol, afgelopen najaar uitmondde in een tentoonstelling te Slot Zeist. Hun werk maakte behoorlijk wat indruk, door de verhalende, fantasievolle en eigentijdse manier waarmee ze Rembrandts werk geïnterpreteerd hebben. De tentoonstelling kreeg lovende kritieken en trok duizenden bezoekers. Zonder de support van de volgende mensen was het project nooit van de grond gekomen: Klaas Fopma (fotograaf), Tim Besteman (atelierruimte en fotograaf), Jim Cook, Carl en Hennie Eisma, Anne Linnebank, Familie Jaap Linnebank, Marleen Boland en Anjuli Moncho. ‘And last but not least’, het personeel van de PTA.

Kunstenaars portretteren kinderen tijdens KLM-rondvlucht

KLM en Donkersloot “THE GALLERY” organiseren vandaag een speciale rondvlucht boven Nederland ten bate van Villa Pardoes, het vakantieverblijf in Kaatsheuvel voor kinderen met een levensbedreigende ziekte en hun familie. Dertien jonge Nederlandse kunstenaars portretteren aan boord van een Fokker 50 van KLM Cityhopper zeven kinderen die in Villa Pardoes verblijven.

De rondvlucht gaat vanaf Eindhoven over de woonplaatsen van de kinderen heen. Na afloop kunnen de kinderen de van hun gemaakte portretten mee naar huis nemen. Daarnaast maken de kunstenaars aan boord een schilderij met als thema ‘100 jaar luchtvaart’. Dit kunstwerk wordt zaterdag 11 januari tijdens het Reis Gala in Noordwijk geveild. De opbrengst van het schilderij komt ten goede aan Villa Pardoes.

De rondvlucht wordt door de KLM gratis ter beschikking gesteld. De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn Peter Klashorst, Justus Donker, Marieke van der Pol, Leo Spindelaar (Spin), Sylvester Peperkamp, Leida Blom, Ingeborg Seeleman, Aran Binnerts, Johan Gustavsson and Piet Linnebank.
